Making a Montage

Montage

One of the ways to really make an impact with your art work is to make a montage of them. This just really means displaying a collection, whether it is photos, or art work in a carefully designed arrangement. This can have a most dramatic effect on the space where you wish to hang them.

Guidelines

Although there are no hard and fast rules in creating a montage, there are accepted guide lines that can make the display stand out better, than others, and this also helps as you have to have a starting point somewhere!

Focal point

It might be that your arrangement is made up of one or two large pictures, and a lot more smaller pictures. In this instance your eye will automatically be taken to the larger pictures first, so these would sit better in the centre with the smaller pictures orbiting the larger. This can change where the display might suite an L shape montage, but the same rules apply.

Positioning

Positioning your layout to make a shape such as an oval or sphere will largely depend on the size of art that you are going to display; for example- for an 8-by 10 you might include five or six images, while a large montage of 20  x  30 might have nine or 10 images. If you create a shape with them, you might need more, always trying to keep the gaps between the pictures a consistent size.
